TRAINER SHELBE RUIS (25) WINS FIRST-EVER RACE WITH MAIDEN ROCKPORT BABE IN SANTA ANITA’S FIRST RACE ON SUNDAY

first_imgARCADIA, Calif. (May 15, 2016)–Not only did 20-1 longshot Rockport Babe provide a stunning upset in Sunday’s first race at Santa Anita, the 3-year-old maiden filly by Rockport Harbor provided her 25-year-old trainer, Shelbe Ruis, with her first-ever win.A native of Descanso, in east San Diego County, Ruis grew up in a family steeped in the horse business, as her father, Mick Sr., owned and later trained horses when she was a youngster, and her brother, Mick, (29), was a highly regarded apprentice jockey on the Southern California circuit 13 years ago.Ridden by Fernando Perez, Rockport Babe showed good speed out of the gate going seven furlongs and easily kept 1-5 favorite Tryst at bay through the stretch en route to an authoritative 2 ¾ length win while covering the distance in 1:21.98.“I’m just really excited about this,” said Ruis, whose first racetrack job came as a summertime pony rider for the late Mike Mitchell at Del Mar at the age of 16. “This filly was my fourth starter and I didn’t expect her to show that much speed. But it looked like the one (heavily favored Tryst) was the only other horse with speed, so we told Fernando that if she went, to try and sit second, and if she didn’t, to just go.”In only her second career start, Rockport Babe, who is owned by Ruis’ father, Mick and mother, Wendy, paid $42.00, $9.00 and $5.00.A $49,000 Barretts May 2-year-old in training purchase a year ago, Rockport Babe picked up $33,600 for the win, increasing her earnings to $34,720.And what might be next for Ruis’ stable star?“I think she’ll run all day, but I just want to see how she comes back, and go from there,” said Ruis, who now has 11 horses stabled at Santa Anita.last_img read more

SA punches above its weight at Davos

first_imgSouth Africa punched above its weight at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum that came to a close in Davos, Switzerland on Sunday, with President Jacob Zuma and the International Marketing Council of SA driving a high-profile presence at the gathering of global business and political leaders. The country’s biggest ever delegation, a public-private partnership led by President Jacob Zuma, attended the meeting, where South Africa was featured as a theme, as well as the host of the official Soiree dinner for Davos delegates on Saturday.‘Experience South Africa’Under the theme “Experience South Africa”, leading international economic and political decision-makers were exposed to the best of South African art, cuisine and fine wines, as well as a number of sessions on the official Davos programme focused on “South Africa 2010 and beyond”.Saturday’s soiree, organised by the International Marketing Council, featured the cream of South Africa’s musical talent – the likes of Freshlyground, the Afrotenors, Jimmy Dludlu and Sibongile Mngoma – and nine of the country’s top chefs.Works by nine major South African artists, drawn from the Standard Bank Corporate Collection of South African Art, were on show in main Davos venue for the duration of the event, while the colours of the South African flag were ever-present in the woolen hats and scarves handed out as gifts to all the delegates. The 20:80 principleAnitha Soni, chairperson of the International Marketing Council, told Moneyweb’s Alec Hogg that South Africa’s Davos campaign had been “driven by the 20:80 principle, and that is to focus on the 20% of the decision-makers out there that we hope to influence.“And these 20% really put us here in Davos for the next three to four days, and we want to be top of mind to them – not only as a 2010 destination … but more especially for what 2010 will do for us as a country.”Leading “Team South Africa”, President Zuma used the opportunity to assure the international community of the country’s readiness to host the 2010 Fifa World Cup, and to market the country as a destination for business, trade and tourism.Zuma said the World Cup offered an opportunity for the world to see and experience Africa in a different way.“It is an opportunity to tackle stereotypes and preconceptions, and explore new frontiers of interaction and cooperation. It is an important milestone in the regeneration of the continent.”‘A Conversation on South Africa’Zuma also participated in a special plenary session entitled “A Conversation on South Africa”, which looked at the achievements and challenges of South Africa 20 years after the release of Nelson Mandela.Zuma told the world’s movers and shakers that the country had built a resilient economy which was now beginning to show signs of recovery following the global economic crisis. He said growth in the South African economy required a mixture of public and private investment. The challenge was to find the right balance between state intervention and market-driven economic activity. The two should reinforce each other, he said.Zuma also joined leaders from Mexico, Canada, Korea, Vietnam and Spain in a plenary discussion on “Global Governance Redesigned”.Zuma said a major problem with global decision-making was that poor countries did not have a say in important decisions that affected them, and called for an overhaul of multilateral institutions like the UN Security Council, World Bank and International Monetary Fund.He also held bilateral meetings with Soros Foundation chairman George Soros, former US President Bill Clinton, UK Conservative Party leader David Cameron, Swiss Confederation President Doris Leuthard, the Duke of York HRH Prince Andrew, Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, and former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.SAinfo reporter and BuaNewslast_img read more

South African police in record drug bust

first_img26 June 2014South African police have seized nearly 10 tons of pure heroin worth over R3-billion (US$280-million) and arrested three men, including two Chinese nationals, in the biggest drug bust in the country’s history.Police uncovered the drug laboratory in the upmarket suburb of Kloof in Durban, and conducted the successful raid on Tuesday night, confiscating piles of 40-kilogram bags of pure heroin powder along with industrial mixers and chemistry equipment. The three arrested suspects, aged 23, 55 and 56, were charged with manufacturing drugs and were expected to appear at the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. The Witness newspaper reported on Thursday that the three were understood to be “underlings” in an international drug syndicate, and that the hunt for the kingpins was now on, with forensic detectives having flown in from across the country to analyse the evidence being assembled from the hi-tech drug lab.“I can say that investigators are using evidence that was found during the raid … to establish where they came from,” National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega told The Witness after visiting the compound on Wednesday.“I recently stated that I have issued an instruction that Crime Intelligence identify the top 15 syndicates in the country and work together with the detectives and the hawks to go after these syndicates operating in serious crime such as drugs, cash in transit, human trafficking, money laundering, arms and ammunition,” Phiyega said.“These drugs that we uncovered destroy the lives of our people who use them, especially the youth. They also are a huge contributor to other related crimes such as murder and robberies.”According to The Witness, the drug lab had been shut away in what was once a squash court on a sprawling property sheltered by trees, with the main house and garage used to store the uncut narcotics.SAnews.gov.za and SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Relationships Create an Unfair Advantage in Sales

first_img Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. The key is to lead customers through a series of necessary steps designed to prevent a purchase stall.” Buy Now There are reasons that companies have their purchasing departments lead the selection of their strategic partners. There are reasons that arm’s length buying processes exist. The goal is an objective decision as to who their partners will be based on certain criteria decided beforehand. Why do they seek to prevent salespeople from developing a relationship, you ask? Why do they want an objective decision? The reason these buying processes exist is that people inside companies believe that relationships create an unfair advantage.I know you’ve heard that relationship selling was dead. You’ve heard that economic value is what’s important now, and it is important, but it’s not the only thing that makes up commercial relationships. A good bit about preference is the decision as to with who your dream client wants to work, who they want on their team.If relationships were dead, you wouldn’t feel the way you do when you get an RFP, and you wouldn’t wish you had a relationship that would tip the balance in your favor. You believe that a relationship would give you the advantage of mindshare and the advantage of preference. You might also have more information, things that could help you know how to influence others by making sure you addressed their needs. If relationships were dead, you wouldn’t be worried when your longest relationship in your largest and most loyal client leaves the company. You also wouldn’t worry when the lead person on a deal you are working quits the week before you are supposed to sign a contract. The reason you worry when your sponsor leaves is that you know that relationship protects you from the risk of being competitively displaced. All said, there is nothing more likely to produce better results faster than people who work well together and who are on the same page. Transacting lowers prices, not the costs that are increased by transactional relationships. If you want an unfair advantage, you need to work on developing relationships. If you want to stack the deck in your favor, relationships create preference. Relationships are not dead, especially not as it pertains to sales, selling, and business more generally. This means you need to be in front of opportunities, and you need to wire the building.last_img read more

SPORT IPL PONTING 2

first_imgPonting is optimistic about the form of his one-time Ponting is optimistic about the form of his one-time nemesis Harbhajan Singh, who failed to make India playing XI even once during the WT20. “We, as coaches, want to improve every single player, whether it is a player who is yet to play an IPL game or a player like Harbhajan who has probably played almost all games in IPL. “Harbhajan was probably disappointed not to get some games in the World T20. Now he is back again with MI and hes one of our leading bowlers,” said Ponting, referring to the off spinners 18 wickets in 15 games last season and his consistently good show in the earlier editions. Ponting also hopes his side wins most home games at the Wankhede, which he referred as the teams fortress. “We love the crowd support we get here. I was there for the World (T20) Cup semifinal and the atmosphere around the ground was amazing. We have a good record at home. We want to make it a fortress. “Hopefully we can play our best cricket at home. If we can win most of our games at home this season we will be in a good position at the end of this season. We are happy with the squad put together. We have two more days of preparation and training. I am excited about the squad and about the first game,” he said. Ponting is pleased that the big-hitting West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard has made a splendid recovery from the injury, which had ruled him out of the Caribbeans triumphant campaign in the WT20 event. “Pollard is available from the first game. He took part in the full session yesterday and will do it today too. His recovery has been very, very good.” He also said Lendl Simmons, who batted brilliantly against India in the WT20 semifinals soon after landing in the country, has put behind the euphoria of being a part of the victorious West Indies squad. “Actually when he first arrived he told me hes put th celebrations out of his system. WT20 is finished and now IPL starts. He played so well in semifinal against India.” (More) PTI SSR DK CM CMadvertisementlast_img read more

6 Lead Generation Offer Ideas for Content You Already Have

first_imgThis post contains older information, but has been left up for historical reasons. For more up-to-date information, please see our Lead Generation Hub . Topics: Originally published Jul 9, 2010 8:30:00 AM, updated July 28 2017 As a small business owner it can be overwhelming to think of new content ideas. The good news is that compelling offers can be created from the content that you already have. In today’s post we will look at six ways you can use existing content to create offers that covert visitors into leads. 1. FAQ’s – Think about the questions prospects ask you about your business every day. Create a list of the top 20 most common questions and answers and let your visitors download them directly from your website. Your leads will have answers to their most common questions, which can help move them through your sales funnel faster. 2. Kits – A white paper by itself is not compelling, but a white paper, webinar and slide deck packaged together will grab your visitors’  attention. At HubSpot, we use kits often to offer multiple pieces of content on the same subject — give it a try with your own content. 3. Content Expansion – A quick review of your current site can help to inspire new offer ideas. If your products page provides high-level information, use this data as a framework for a detailed PDF about each product or service and let users download it from the related products page. Or take one of your most popular blog posts and expand upon it to include more in-depth analysis and research and offer if as a download on your blog. 4. E-Books – E-books allow you to combine various pieces of information into a report. Additionally, they are more interactive than your average white paper and include links to related information. The perceived value of an e-book is often greater than that of a single white paper. This fact helps your users rationalize completing a form to get the information. 5. Comparisons – Create a PDF that reviews pricing in detail or a feature comparison of your product versus the competition. This is a great way to differentiate two products or services that might seem identical to a top-of-the-funnel lead. Educate your visitors and set yourself up as the thought leader in your industry. Your leads will return to you when they are ready to make a buying decision. 6. Off-Line Content – Do you have content that has been used for various off-line events and marketing in the past? Dust that content off and re-use it online. Print ads, trade show collateral and print articles are some examples of off line content that can be re-purposed for on line use. What types of existing content have you found to be useful when creating new offers for your business? This article was written by Shaun Pinney, a member of our consultant team at HubSpot.
